How To Make a Ring Toss Game | DIY | Woodworking Project | Plans

DIFFICULTY: Intermediate

This woodworking project is based off of the classic carnival ring toss game. I have updated this game to fit within a wooden box. This provides you the ability to take and play the game anywhere.

This project require you to have some familiarity with woodworking basics and have experience in working with different types of building techniques.

• The box is built using only glue to join and attach the corner edges together. This was a first for me. I used “Titebond Ultimate 3” because they claim that it “provides a much stronger bond than the wood itself” and I have to say it is true. No screws were used to hold the box together and I can confirm that the glue bond is solid and I am a believer in the Titebond product. Here is a link to the glue I sed https://amzn.to/2XbC3MG

• Please note you can choose to glue your box together like I did or use your own method and technique at the end of the day you need to make a box.

This game is perfect for school carnivals, parties and tailgating. In order to make this vintage carnival game you will need to do the following:

Instructions

Step 1

You can purchase 2x4ft sheets of plywood or a full 4×8 sheet. I used (4) 2×4 foot sheets to make this project. I only went with the smaller sheets because I didn’t want to fit a full sheet in my minivan. Be sure to download the plans to get all the cut dimensions you need to make this project.

Step 2

After you have cut everything be sure to sand the plywood and break all the edges. I used a 220 grit sand paper.

Step 3

Make sure you dry fit everything together to ensure you have the sides cut correctly. Once it is all set you are ready for the next step.

Step 4

Next I applied Titebond® 3 Ultimate wood glue on all the edges. I only used glue to hold this box together.

Step 5

Once I applied all the glue I used my true and faithful Irwin and Bessey clamps to hold everything together and let it dry over night.

Step 6

next I installed the side supports for the rails that will hold the pins for the ring toss game.

Step 7

I cut all the rails at the same time to ensure they were all the same length. I used one of my favorite tools in my shop my Bosch® Miter saw.

Step 8

After you cut all the rails you now need to drill the holes for the pins. You can use a drill press or a hand drill if you don’t have a drill press. Be sure to use a fluted drill bit.

Step 9

I used a General Finishes dye stain for my ring toss game. This gave me the vintage look I wanted.

Let the dye dry over night

Step 11

After I dyed the dowels for the game I then stained the inside and outside of the box with a light brown color. This dye is water based and that was perfect for what I needed as I wanted to give this ring toss game a vintage look.

Step 12

Next I applied a clear coat over the outside and inside of the box. Rather than using spray polyurethane I simply just used a clear gloss spray. It is much cheaper and does almost the same thing.

Step 13

This was the step that scared me the most. I only had one shot at applying the graphic to the wooden top. I did not want to mess it up as it cost me $40 to have it printed at Kinko’s. I was able to tap into my illustration minor in college and had fun designing this graphic for this project. let me know in the comments if you would like me to make this graphic available to purchase as it is currently not available with the plans.

Step 14

This was one of the most rewarding parts of the build. Installing the box and back hinges. I could now see my game coming to life.

Step 15

Install the rails, pins and hardware and you are now ready to play ring toss.
